Antonia Munroe

Antonia Munroe is a Camden artist known for her exquisitely painted still lifes. These elegant paintings in oil and oil pastel on panel are both decorative and disturbing. These paintings record traces of event, fragments of love, connection, loss, regret. Memory invests objects with meaning, and in her still lifes Munroe looks closely and passionately and then paints those meanings", wrote Deborah Weisgall. Munroe's landscapes, though quite different, share a kind of surrealness with her still lifes. These small images of inland and coastal Maine are like evocative postcards from another world she somehow feels drawn to the vastness of the Maine landscape as a necessary counterpoint to the smaller scope of still-life and flower painting. It is as if one side of her personality is determined to catch up with the other and find a means of expression. -Patti M. Marsen. Munroe studied at Simon's Rock Early College and the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work is in numerous public and private collections around the world.
