Brooklyn Museum Acquires Katherine Bradford Work

Canada, New York and Adams and Ollman, Portland, OR are pleased to jointly announce the acquisition of Katherine Bradford, Mother’s Lap, 2020 by the Brooklyn Museum, New York. Mother’s Lap was generously gifted to the Museum by Andy and Christine Hall for all to enjoy. The painting will become part of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum.

“Katherine Bradford is a brilliant Brooklyn-based artist, and her rich sense of color and feel for humanity intertwine in this painting to evoke collective feelings of hardship and support, while also exploring archetypes, acts, and gestures of motherhood. Mother’s Lap is a thrilling, luminous addition to the Brooklyn Museum’s feminist art collection.”

–Carmen Hermo, Associate Curator, Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, the Brooklyn Museum

Mother’s Lap was a key work in the artist’s exhibition, Mother Paintings, that was on view at Canada in 2021. This painting explores the archetype of the mother and marks a turning point in the artist’s subject matter.
