JILL MADDEN creates landscape paintings with a specific interest in northern ecosystems, including arctic zones, boreal forests and northern oceans. The richness and preservation of these ecosystems inform her work, mostly done onsite, allowing for drawing, painting, observing and researching flora and fauna. The forms of rare species and migratory birds such as Bicknell’s Thrush and Peregrine Falcon have become part of her visual language. Jill received her BA from Middlebury College and MFA from Boston University. She has been a fellow at The Jentel Foundation, Banner, Wyoming; The Fairfield Porter Foundation, Great Spruce Head Island, Maine; the Baer Art Center, Hofsos, Iceland; Pouch Cove Foundation, Pouch Cove, Newfoundland and has recently been granted a residency at Cill Rialaig in Ballinskellig, Ireland. Her most recent show at Caldbeck Gallery, in 2024, exhibited work from Pouch Cove. In her upcoming show “You are Here” at Middlebury College’s Johnson Gallery, she explores mapping, drawing and painting from the two undeveloped arctic ecosystems in Vermont- Mt Abraham and Camel’s Hump, along with the Lake Champlain basin and the Breadloaf Wilderness.
